The work made in Los-Angeles based artist Rebecca Laws’ studio lives at the intersection of science and magic: though explainable through logical means, it evokes the unknowable aspects of our world. Her subjects, often elements of nature, intersect with technology like screenshots, QR codes, Craigslist posts, and alternative printing techniques; creating a palpable tension between the viewer’s understanding of the medium and its relationship with the natural world. Emphasizing photography as a transformation of natural energy by exposing, stripping, manipulating, or highlighting its individual elements, often results in an object imbued with a sense of a missed message, and a tug of longing from viewing something unknowable.
